FRIDAY ROUND UP WITH A THURSDAY FEEL
Why is Apple TV the absolute worst at promoting shows?
I have been consuming considerable Apple TV content and I really need to have a conversation with their marketing team because unless someone I follow on social media is posting about a show, I will never, ever see Apple TV original programming. I am not talking Ted Lasso (I still have not seen that and I don't plan on it, this is nothing against Jason Sudekis but I am just not interested) or The Morning Show, but great shows like Mythic Quest, Silo, Shrinking and now The Studio. We just discovered Silo randomly while looking for a new show to watch (and before you ask, I still have not finished Ozark and yes we still have about seven episodes left) and it's a good show. Maybe there was discourse on it and I missed it but this show is damn good even if Common is the worst actor on this show. Also, who is Common dating these days?
Anywho, below is the pop culture I have been consuming and I am not saying I am recommending all of these. If I saw something that sucked, you're gonna hear about it!
Movies
Truthfully, I have not been watching a ton of movies recently, I have been watching more shows but that's okay, you get what you get from me)
Pride & Prejudice (2005 version) - I am putting this on here because I rewatch this constantly but also, the 20th anniversary just passed. I was unable to watch it in the theaters for the limited showing but it's not like I don't own. I know I was a Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy die hard but damn if Matthew Macfadyen took that crown and ran with it.
Not A Goof (2025, Disney +) - What is the best Disney animated film and why is it A Goofy Movie? Tevin Campbell. This is a documentary on the making of A Goofy Movie and how it reached cult status. Not the best documentary I have ever seen but the making of part of the film was fantastic but having to hear five minutes of YouTubers saying how it's an underrated film and how much they love it, I could do without it. We are aware it is now a cult classic, I don't need a dude with a podcast mic telling me the obvious.
Television
(I have been watching a lot of series)
Silo (Apple TV) - as the above rant established, Apple TV has some of the best shows lately. We finished Season One rather quickly and started season two (there are only two seasons currently). Rebecca Ferguson is amazing in this show and I love a murder, dystopian mystery. Everyone is great in this show and I can't wait to finish season two.
The Studio (Apple TV) - this show, created by Seth Rogen, is my jam. This is about Seth Rogen's character becoming a studio head and all the shenanigans that come with running a studio. Ike Barinholtz plays his right hand studio executive and it is hilarious. I love everything about this show, I love learning about behind the scenes studio magic (and I am aware this is not all real but it is fascinating). I also love that Apple TV does weekly drops. I am tired of shows where all episodes are dumped at once.
Summer House (Bravo) - I am entirely way too late to this party, but I am finally after watching the previous eight seasons am all caught up with Summerhouse. I absolutely love this show. I was aware of the drama of the show just for being in the Bravo Universe (through social media) so I knew about the breakups and broken engagements. I have a lot to say about this show and I think I will have a podcast episode dedicated to it. If you love Bravo shows, and are like me very late to the party, definitely watch this. Also, the seasons are shorter than a typical Housewives season so it will be very easy to catch up.
Suits: LA, Grosse Point Garden Society are the other two shows that I am watching on Peacock and I am very much enjoying. I know I mentioned them before but we're nine episodes in both shows and yes, I know Suits: LA is no where near as good as the original Suits, it's still a nice show to get into.
Wheel of Time (Prime) - I just re-watched season one and started season two. Season three is already out but I am trying to read the books first and apparently season two was based on books two and three (finally finished three) and season three is based on book four. I love this show. I do enjoy the books so if you like fantasy, I would get into it.
Books
Minor Feelings: An Asian-American Reckoning by Cathy Park Hong - I loved this collection of essays - it's part memoir and part cultural criticism which I very much appreciated. As a daughter of both an immigrant and an American, my relationship to the Spanish language is very complicated so to read someone else's experience growing up with albeit a very different language, Korean, gave me a lot more clarity to what I was dealing with growing up that I've never actually reconciled with.
Other books I am currently reading:
The Shadow Rising (The Wheel of Time Book #4) - Listen, I am slowly going to make my way through this series and if I want to watch Season Three of the show I need to finish this book! It is long!!!
The Likeness (Dublin Murder Squad, Book #2) - I love a cop murder mystery (sue me) and I love the ones from across the pond. There are I think six books in this series and it's all based on this murder squad out of Dublin. It's pretty messed up but I enjoy it!
I need to do more reading! Less doom scrolling. I need to take my own advice and touch grass... oh I would love to be walking and running... oh wait... back to depression and doom scrolling.
See you all again on Monday. I've been going down a Fritz Lang rabbit hole so it could be an old Hollywood themed rant or who knows what will be going down over the weekend...
